Children often minimize experiences to avoid feeling overwhelmed or to protect adults from worry. “It’s not a big deal” can mean “I don’t want to think about this,” or “I’m scared of what happens next.”
You can honor their words without dismissing your instincts. Try, “I hear you, and I also want to make sure you’re okay. Even small things can have a big impact sometimes.” You don’t need their agreement to offer care and protection.
